What is a work environment management system?

A health and safety management system is a structured approach to managing, planning and developing the health and safety performance of an organization. It is based on the international standard ISO 45001, which is fundamentally about creating order to detect risks before they lead to accidents or injuries.

Why is systematic health and safety management needed?

A well-functioning OSH management system helps you meet the requirements of AFS 2001:1 and ISO 45001, requiring employers to regularly investigate, assess risks, take action and monitor the work environment. However, the benefits go beyond compliance.

Benefits include

  • Reduced sick leave: By identifying physical and psychosocial risks in time, you keep your staff healthy.

  • Increased profitability: Accidents and production stoppages cost a lot of money. A safe workplace is usually an efficient workplace.

  • Attractive employer: Candidates with in-demand talent choose companies that prioritize health and sustainability.

  • Legal certainty: In the event of an accident, documented procedures and risk assessments are essential to demonstrate your responsibility.

ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system

ISO 45001 is the global standard that defines how an OSH management system should be designed. It is a strategic framework that helps organizations integrate OSH issues directly into business operations, rather than managing them on the side. ISO 45001 certification is proof that you are following international best practice with clear requirements for leadership and employee involvement.

Requirements and content

ISO 45001 follows the same structure as quality management systems and environmental management systems, but with specific additions for health and safety. The standard specifies what organizations should achieve in seven main areas:

  1. Organizational context: identifying internal and external factors and stakeholders that affect your work environment.

  2. Leadership and participation: Management must take responsibility and show commitment. A unique requirement of ISO 45001 is that employees should also be involved in decision-making and risk assessments.

  3. Planning: Systematically identifying hazards, assessing risks and opportunities and setting measurable health and safety objectives.

  4. Support: The right resources, skills and communication must be in place for the system to work.

  5. Operations: Processes to eliminate hazards, manage change and control purchases and/or contractors safely.

  6. Evaluation: Performance must be monitored, measured and analyzed. It also includes requirements for internal audits and management review.

  7. Improvement: Manage incidents and non-conformities and work on continuous improvement of the working environment.

2. report easily

Make it easy to do the right thing. Let employees report incidents and risk observations directly via a QR code or app. The easier it is to report, the better the basis for preventing accidents.
